THE IMPORTANCE OF SINGLE-USE PRODUCTS IN THE DENTAL PRACTICE

Updated: Jan 5, 2025

Dentistry has a rich history dating back to 5,000 BC, but it wasn't until the 19th century that universal standards for infection control were introduced. Today, with state-of-the-art sterilization protocols and procedures, there is absolutely no reason for any patient to be at risk of infection in a dental office. These protocols equip clinicians with the most advanced products, ensuring the highest level of safety and care for patients.

When selecting dental supplies, it is essential to understand the significance of products labeled as "single-use." Single-use items are manufactured for a single procedure on a single patient, as defined by the US Federal Drug Administration. Reusing single-use items can pose risks of cross-contamination and compromise patient safety, despite the initial temptation to extend their use.

Continuing to use single-use products such as saliva ejectors, prophy angles, cotton, gauze, equipment covers, and burs can lead to potential risks. While some items may seem reusable, it is crucial to follow guidelines to prevent cross-contamination and ensure optimal patient care.

Reusing dental burs, for example, can have implications on both clinician and patient safety. Despite attempts to clean and sterilize burs, they may retain tissue debris from previous use, affecting their cutting ability and potentially introducing contaminants. Studies show that reusing burs as sterile instruments may not be supported by sufficient evidence.

Using a used bur can result in more labor-intensive work and potential risks to both equipment and patient health. The minimal cost of a new bur, typically under five dollars, outweighs the potential drawbacks of reusing instruments. Opting for new burs for each patient ensures efficient procedures and avoids unnecessary risks.

Consider the long-term benefits of using new burs in every procedure. By prioritizing patient safety and efficiency, you can enhance the quality of care provided in your practice. Make informed choices that prioritize safety and excellence in patient care.
